How to get your kids involved in your design project

If you’re thinking of updating your child’s room or play area, we have a few tips for you on how to engage your child in the process.

Our 10, 8, and 3-year-old clients in a meeting with The Modern Vic, discussing the details of their shared bedroom.  We like to make all of our clients feel comfy with a few snacks and beverages—juice pouches for these boys!

  1. We’ve found that children can be a little afraid of change, so when we’re thinking about a brand new design for a room, we talk about how that space can be transformed for the activities the child enjoys. Instead of just saying, “We’re going to turn this place into an art space for you!”, we talk about creating a new place to paint pictures and mold clay.

  2. We ask about what our little client loves: animals, cars and trucks, astronauts, or maybe princesses. We incorporate these loves into the design where it makes the most sense.

  3. We give the kiddos pictures of what we plan to change and options for them to choose their favorite things. This way, the space really feels like their own.

Seeing your bedroom turned upside down can be scary—for adults and kids—so we try to coordinate the biggest changes to happen all at once. It’s not an easy feat, but it has big rewards so the reveal is a delightful and complete surprise.

At the Modern Vic, we love referrals from our amazing clients! If you know of families looking to improve their space for entertaining and child-friendly living, we’d love to talk to them. Please pass along our newsletter to folks who might be interested in our design services.

A Zoom design meeting with our 7-year-old client resulted in a personalized bedroom she shares with her older sister.
